A destination with history
For these reasons, different defensive bastions were built, highlighting the Zahara Castle, built in the 16th century, not only as a defensive building, but also as a residence for nobles and kings who were already coming to Zahara to visit the traps. This castle is named in Cervantes's work "The Illustrious mop".
At the beginning of the 16th century, and due to the good Almadrabera campaigns, Zahara began to be populated. Merchants, soldiers and almadraberos would be the first to inhabit the place, thus the first houses emerged, with weak structures and almost always attached to the palace walls. This configuration was maintained until the end of the 20th century with the construction and tourism boom.
The Castle of Zahara de los Atunes was declared a National Monument on April 22, 1949, and in 1985 it was designated a Site of Cultural Interest.
